David and Melinda’s Story by Crystal Ogle
July 14th, 2003 11:45pm: David called and thought you could use some help. I headed right over. Cynthia had left about an hour ago. She had checked you and you were 2 cm along. The birthing ball seemed to have been helpful so far. After talking a bit we decided it would be best to try and let your body rest. You hadn’t been able to get much sleep the last few nights, and you’d be needing a lot of strength and energy later. We got you in a comfortable, side lying position with lots of pillows and a warm water bottle. Once you were tucked away, I headed for a nap on the couch.
July 15th, 6:00 am: You’ve been up for about 45 minutes now having some good contractions. You were able to get some much needed rest, but now the contractions are regular and pretty painful. Your mom called and you had your first really good contraction while talking to her. The conversation paused, the phone dropped, and I heart the first OUCH! Now that’s encouraging!!!
7:00 am: We are trying different positions now. It seems the contractions are getting harder to stay comfortable through. I suggested going for a walk. The change of scenery, and some fresh air could do some good. We packed up Maggie and headed for the trails. I never knew there were so many ambitious people out walking at 7 o’clock in the morning (or mosquitoes for that matter). I think the walking started to speed up the labor, and make the contractions harder. Needless to say our walk didn’t’ last too long, but it used up some time.
8:45 am: Things are getting pretty intense, the contractions are regular, close together, and much more painful. We decided to give Cynthia a call, and she’s on her way. David seems to be a natural comfort to you. His hands-on support is just what you need.
12:00 pm: You’ve been in the tub and coping beautifully. Cynthia thinks it would be a good time to get out and have a check. You’re dilated to 7 cm. A pleasant surprise and wonderful progress. Cynthia has called Sarah to come over. You both seem to feel encouraged. Everyone starts to busy themselves preparing for the baby. You have done such an awesome job.
4:05 pm: You had your first grunt and push. The last few contractions during transition were the hardest. You turned to David for comfort, calling his name, grabbing at his pant legs, and practically pulling him into the pool with you!
5:20 pm: You are in the water, and not wanting to go anywhere else. You’ve adapted to pushing wonderfully, and you’re doing a great job. Maggie is really concerned. I’ve never had to comfort a dog before, but with her it’s like she’s a family member. I’m holding her so she can see what’s going on. As the head is becomes visible, the baby’s hair is flowing in the water, dark and long.
July 15th, 2003 5:27 pm: She’s born, all 8lbs and 2 ounces! And raised up into your welcoming arms. David was behind you and holding you up and I had a hold of a very curious Maggie. Finally, after a few minutes David took Maggie to see the newest member of the family. Maggie licked her toes, and made friends right away.
I believe you gave her the healthiest and most wonderful start to life by having a natural childbirth, and I admire your decision as well as the courage and strength you both demonstrated throughout. I think natural childbirth gives a couple tools to strengthen their own relationship and promotes natural love and bonding. I thank both of you for letting me be a part of this miracle. I’ve gained both experience and many memories to treasure throughout my life and career.
